Zach Harms 5 / 1 / 07 Extra Credit Extra Credit Troy Report The original work of “The Iliad” by Homer had one prominent factor that is missing in the modern version of the story, the gods. “Wolfgang Petersen dropped the various Greek Gods from the storyline (Zeus, etc) claiming them to be silly and unnecessary to the plot.” (Wikipedia) From the very first appearance of Achilles in the movie Troy, we understand that the fantasy world of ancient Greek mythology had no part in the movie. Achilles denies rumors of his immortality, claiming there was no reason for him to have a shield if he could not be killed. He also shrugs off the notion that his mother, Thetis, is a goddess, whom we see later as a regular woman walking on a beach (a possible reference to her true mythological form as a sea nymph). In the Iliad Achilles shows the utmost confidence in his connections with the gods, Zeus as his protector and Athena as his helper and guide. In the movie it is clear he has no respect for the gods in the least, instead he shows disdain for religious people and laughs at those afraid of supernatural consequences. His confidence is solely in his own abilities and experience. Achilles may have been homo with Patroklos in the original Iliad, but it is clear that the director knew today’s society would not be as accepting of a flaming hero as the ancient audiences may have been.
