Basic Principles of Physical Fitness Intro: a physically active lifestyle produces many physical, psychological and emotional benefits Exercise is one of the most important means of maintaining wellness - helps people generate more energy - control weight - manage stress - boost immune system - provides psychological benefits such as confidence - protects against heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, cancer Physical activity as a Continuum- physical activity can range from casual activities to intense, sustained activities Surgeon general recommends that Americans expend at least 150 calories a day in physical activity Components of Fitness - cardio respiratory endurance o ability to perform prolonged large muscle exercise at moderate to high levels of intensity o central component of fitness that trains the heart - muscular strength o is the amount of force a muscle can exert with a single maximum effort - muscular endurance o is the ability to sustain a given level of muscle contraction for a long
