Developmental Psychology Study Guide 1) Common physical/ health issues that increase during the ages of 60-70 are arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Older adults spend more time and money with doctors, hospitals, and using medications. 5% of the elderly over the age of 65 reside in a nursing home while 25% over the age of 80-85 also reside in a nursing home. A nursing home should provide activities, food, access to others, and great healthcare. Choices in all of these are a necessity to feel a sense of control. 2) Short- term memory – limited in its length and capacity. Only lasts 30 seconds and can remember 7-9 characters like a phone number. Short term memory does not change as we get older. The limitations in this finding are: Speed of recall is slower Capacity affected if attention is divided Do not remember well if asked to reorganize information. 3) Problems with memory encoding are that there is a lack of attention and perception so things
