Terms: -Aleatory - (chance, indeterminate) music; is music in which some element of the composition is left to chance or some primary element of a composed work's realization is left to the determination of its performer -Atonality - the absence of any feeling of tonality -Minimalism - a late 20 th -century style involving many repetitions of simple music fragments - Musique concrete - music composed with natural sounds recorded electronically -Serialism (12-tone system) - the technique of composing with a series generally a twelve-tone series -Tone Row - non-repetitive ordering of the twelve notes (pitch-classes in musical set theory) of the chromatic scale II. Know the names of works by the following composers: -Berg: Wozzeck (opera) -Copland (2 or 3): Appalachian Spring (orchestra), Fanfare for the Common Man (orchestra), The Second Hurricane (opera) -Varese (1): Deserts (for instruments and tape in electronic music) -Crumb (1): Black Angels (electronic string quartet) -John Adams: Nikon to China (opera), Violin Concerto (orchestra)
