Katie Silva April 8, 2008 Judaism Basic Facts: -monotheistic: believe in one god -wont say or write god’s name -write G_d or yhwh (no vowels) -use word “adoni” when speaking of god -Abraham is the founder -wife: Sarah -servant: Hagar, mothered son Ishmael (Islam) -Sarah mothered Issac (Judaism) -Islam and Christianity are based on Judaism’s teachings -first king: King David -can not drive to synagogue, must walk -cant eat pork, ham, bacon Terms: -Diaspora: spread out, leave own land -talit: shall, prayer cloth -t’fillin: leather cord used for binding/praying -psalms: written by King David asking for forgiveness, 150 -phylacteries: box that contains Shema, bound to arms or forehead -mezuzah: contains words from the Torah, placed by door, touch when enter -shabot: another word for Sabbath, sunset Friday to sundown Saturday -Shema: recited at birth and before death Sects: -orthodox: very strict, very extreme, wear black clothes, women have long skirts and sleeves, curls by ears -conservative: less strict but still extreme
