Writers being aware of their writing--The power of literatureInferno, Inferno ~ She's married to someone else. They read a book about Arthur & Guinevere. Just reading the story because Paolo & Francesca fall inlove -- A testament to the power of the word ~> what an impact reading can make -- The story overcame them & they end up in hell -- "Our Galehot was that book & he who wrote it" -- Literature is strong!1001 Nights, Many Unknown ~ Writer--the storyteller being very aware of being a storyteller -- Talk to the audience in the work itself -- Writers are very aware they are going to tell a story that will entice the authorDon Quixote, Cervantes ~ Prologue -- Purpose:it cannot go against nature b/c I am who I am (like begets like) >> I'm dried up, shriveled & eccentric -- He's telling us this story is something new, something different ~ His insanity is often discussed -- Cause is READING! ~ The WORLD is suffering for his delay ~ Last paragraph ~> run on paragraph *Example of bad writing -- Too broad -- Trying to be overmuch -- Etc. -- Cervantes is playing with US! -- He is aware of his technique & the power of writing in a very satirical way Shakespeare~ As long as this (poem) exists, you exist Who's at the bottom of hell? what does Satan look like?~ He stands in the ice lake of Cocytus w/ his torso rising above the surface -- He has 3 horrible faces, 1 looking forward while the other look backward watching what’s behind --Beneath each head is a set of wings constantly flapping back & forth >> The wind from his wings keep Cocytus frozen --He holds a sinner each mouth—Brutus, Cassus, & Judas Gilgamesh/Enkidu v Don Quixote/Sancho Panza
