Sociology is a brand of social science committed to the study of the lives of people, groups, and societies. More specifically, sociologists study the interactions of these sets. Though a lens of social interaction, a sociologist might examine the social rules and constructs that bind not only individuals, but also larger constructs and institutions. Behavior of humans as social beings is of particular note from smaller scale short contact between individuals – micro-processes such as interpersonal interactions and socialization of individuals – more global social processes – for example, micro- structures that organize society such as race, ethnicity, social class, gender, and familial institution – and social processes that represent a deviation from the typical structure such as crime and divorce. Its application as a science is twofold and has evolved since its incarnation. Initially, the aim of sociologists was to better understand the social animal; that is, they hoped to increase the level of knowledge humankind had about themselves and the way they interact with others.
