Materials Styrofoam cups 6M HCl Thermister 3M HCl 6M NaOH Unknown metal #2 3M NaOH Methods--Week 1 Build calorimeter To build the calorimeter, two Styrofoam cups and a circular piece of Styrofoam were needed. Two 1 cm holes were poked in the Styrofoam disc approximately 3 cm apart. The disc was then placed in the top of one of the cups, where it made a tight fit. This cup was then placed in the second cup. Calibrate thermister Before the heat capacity of the calorimeter could be calculated, the thermister had to be calibrated. The thermister’s data was interpreted using the computer program LabWorks. Two samples of water, with one substantially hotter than the other, were used. To calibrate, a thermometer and the thermister were placed in first the cold, then the hot water. When the thermometer reached equilibrium, the value was entered into the computer. After values had been entered for both hot and cold water, the thermister was ready to use. Mixing temperatures
