Dr. Payne: Study Guide – First Examination History 201 Fall 2006 Test on Wednesday October 3 Your midterm examination will consist of one of the following essays and 4 terms to identify. Essay: (80%) Discuss the English entry into the race for colonies in the Americas. Discuss the specific events, institutions, and people that led to the creation and development of the British North American Empire. When doing so, specifically address the English motives. Discuss mercantilism as it pertains to the British Empire as an economic system. Be sure to include failures and success in their early efforts. Compare and contrast the founding and the development of the southern colonies with the northern colonies. While you may discuss generalizations, you should concentrate on Massachusetts Bay Colony and Virginia. Discuss the importance of religion in the founding of the British North American colonies. How did religion motivate the founding of certain colonies? What did the colonist see as their mission? What did they mean by religious freedom?
