Online learning has revolutionized the world. Online learning does not just happen it
requires careful planning and implementation. Although Online learning makes earning an
education much more reachable, it has its shortcomings. When one thinks of online learning, you
think of independent learners. For the young children, Online Learning has proven to be a
troublesome thing. Some of the issues that hinders online learning success where children are
concerned is their short attention span, level of readiness, distractions at home, internet issues
and lack of gadgets. Research has shown that face to face interaction is much more effective in
the learning process of children. Teacher- student interaction in a face-to-face setting is
incomparable to online learning sessions. Online learning is good and has its advantages, but it
is not the best mode of learning for students from Grades K to 12.
The Attention Span of Students from Grades K to 12 is noticeably short
In a usual school setting it takes a lot of different teaching strategies and effort to keep
children interested in a regular class lesson. Children are fidgety and at the end of every lesson
and even during a regular teaching period they are always busy to take a break. They get
distracted by their classmates which interferes with learning but with the teacher being present to
get the students back on track, learning does take place. Online learning due to the pandemic
(Covid-19) has stretched the regular school hours. Having six school aged children at home, I
have a first hand experience where the school day starts at 8am and usually ends at 10pm
because of numerous assignments needed to complete and this can be very frustrating for both
the student and the parent. One of the distractions to receiving an education at home is that the
students sometimes have no control of the distractions that surround them. “Virtual classrooms
not an ideal learning environment for school children” Chunduru 2020 exclaims, that online

learning can be chaotic for the parents and children. “ Once a teacher begins her class, all parents
are expected to mute their child’s microphones. “But nobody does this!” exclaims Sridevi,
“Meanwhile, all the children keep shouting. Parents try to butt in with advice or questions for the
