Brent Meschuk RS 010-1 April 2, 2008 Philemon Book Fact Sheet Book: Philemon Part A Authorship: According to historians, Colossians and Philemon were written at the same time, which would mean that Paul is the author of Philemon. This is relatively undisputed by most scholars. Date and Place : As said above, Colossians and Philemon were written together, which would mean a date between 56CE to 60CE. Most likely, this particular letter was written while Paul was imprisoned in Caesuras or Rome. Historical Context : Onesimus was expelled from the house of Philemon, where he was originally a slave under Philemon. Paul writes to convince him to not reject but receive Onesimus back into his house, not as a slave but as a brother. Genre : Philemon is an Apostolic Epistle of Paul.
