Dear Friend, I hope that all is well. I was very pleased to hear that your work in Shakespearean research received an award, congratulations! Given your expertise in this area, I wanted seek your opinion on some Shakespearean research of my own. Following your rather enlightening lecture on the rival poet sonnets, I decided to examine to what extent these sonnets could be used to express the views of characters in the play. I chose sonnet 80 because I believe it expresses how Helena feels about Demetrius; it explores her one-sided feelings for Demetrius, and how it affects her. Helena has a rather unfortunate relationship with Demetrius. She loves him but he loves Hermia. Although her situation in itself is unfortunate, what makes it worse is that Hermia is Helena’s close friend. Which further complicates matters because, although Hermia is in love with someone else; Lysander, her father wants her to marry Demetrius. The play is set in Athens, and under Athenian law
