Discussion Itinerary, Week 4: Discussion Questions: Movie Private Dicks and Breasts How is the penis tied to masculinity and sense of self for the men in the movie? How are breasts tied to femininity and sense of self for women in the movie? In what ways did the male peer group influence/set up norms concerning what is normal or desirable? How did the group of three fraternity brothers talk about sex and penises in ways that were different from the men who talked individually? Do you think talking as a group changed the way they discussed their penises and sex lives? ( specifically what I’m getting at here is that guys tend to express feelings that are more stereotypically masculine when they are in groups. Studies have even shown that young boys act more rambunctious and “masculine” in groups. It’s therefore probably not coincidental that the three fraternity brothers talked about sex in a less nuanced way, criticized their friend for not wanting sex all the time, and expressed questionable attitudes about having sex with women sometimes in spite of what the woman might want. I have a feeling they would have had different answers if they had been interviewed individually ). Why is size an issue for men? How does this make it hard for men? Is size an issue for women? How did the female peer group influence/set up norms? In what ways was the female peer group different from or similar to the male peer group? Is size also an issue for women?
