Jessica Talavera Period 3February 14, 2015Prompt 3: Much of the literature of the first half of the twentieth century reflects the spirit of apathy or ennui that characterized the writers of the Lost Generation. Write a well-developed and organized essay in which you discuss Erich Maria Remarque’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” as an example of a Lost Generation work. Do not merely summarize the plot. War affects people, it changes their lives, takes them away from their families, their homes and the life they had prior to the war. During the twentieth century many works of literature referenced the “The Lost Generation”, Erich Maria Remarque’s book “All Quiet on the Western Front” showed the lost generation, through the comparison of the younger soldiers to the older soldiers, and through the narration of the book as a whole. In the book, “All Quiet on the Western Front”, the older soldiers are compared to the younger soldiers and new recruits in ways that show how much the younger soldiers have lost themselves and who they are due to the war.
