Since the 1960’s more people have started to identifythemselves as independent rather than with a certain party. Since less people trust the parties,that means that they have less trust in the 2 party system; some people even trust productbrands; nike/adidas/etc, rather than the parties themselves. Americans have become skepticalof the two parties' ability to handle crises that are happening all over the country, however at thesame time support for third parties have started to increase. The two party system however stillhas a lot of power in the political process since there has not been another alternative since.Aparty coalition is a group of people who have a long-term devotion/allegiance to a certainparty.Parts of a country make loyalties with a specific party due to the way they handle majorissues. Both parties depend on coalitions for full support in elections.Catholics and laborunions members in the northeast are part of the democratic coalition, whilefundamentalists protestants are a part of the republic coalition. Basically something bigthat caused the power structure between the 2 parties to change is called a realignment.They can be caused by an election where the minority wins and becomes a part of the majorityparty, then becomes powerful for a long period of time. This happens every 3-4 decades.Partisan dealignment is when people lose their loyalty to a party and make theirdecisions on who to vote for based on the candidates' compententness.The fact thatpeople choose to identify as independent rather than being a partisan shows how an alignment
