Short Answer Questions 1. Why the North’s support of radical reconstruction was waning by the mid 1870’s. -The fact that the republican reconstruction only allowed for free blacks and northern  carpetbaggers and southern scalawags (or men who took the iron clad oath) to be elected to  southern state legislatures causing a widespread response from southern democrats including  violence towards blacks, widespread fear and paranoia, and the development of the early KKK  which committed outright murder of free blacks. -The Freedman’s Bureau as directed by Andrew Johnson and the general federal government  failed severely to establish proper labor relations in the south, causing states like Mississippi  and South Carolina to enforce black codes on its own to keep a written track of black labor,  further disenfranchising blacks under the nose of the federal government. -Failure of the North to successfully ensure black enfranchisement after the 15 th  amendment  amidst growing threat from groups like the KKK who bullied and intimidated blacks making the  amendment in effect null and void. 2. Explain the basic disagreement between Lee and Longstreet over how to fight at Gettysburg.  Whose fault is it. -Lee was an idealist who perceived his forces as being invincible after an astonishing win at  Chancellorsville wanted to lead the fight at Gettysburg in typical gallant fashion with his men  breaking through Meade’s ranks. Longstreet was a pragmatist who admittedly did not believe in  god, and knowing that the force at Gettysburg would be overwhelming for the confederate army  he wanted to fight a trench warfare based fight.  Lee won the argument and lost the battle. _ “Do you expect me to attack again that same high ground which they could not take yesterday  at full strength? With so many officers lost?” Lee was expressionless. -Shaara’s depiction of the argument and the battle itself are completely accurate because the
