Chapter 1 Chemistry in Our Lives 9/6/06 1.1 Definition of Chemistry Chemistry is the study of substances in terms of: Composition - What it is made of Structure - How it is put together Properties - What are its characteristics Reactions - the most important, How stable is it? How does it behave with other substances? - Chemical reactions take place when you digest take place when you digest food and break down into substances that you need for energy and health. Chemistry happens when : A car is started Fertilizer is added to plants to help it grow Food is digested Electricity is produced from burning natural gas Rust forms on iron nails Chemistry in our homes Many products in the home involve chemistry Glass Metal Alloys Chemically treated water Plastics and Polymers Baking Soda 1.2 Matter Is what all materials are made of has mass Occupies space has chemical and Physical properties ex books, toothbrush and toothpaste, bottled water you drink etc. To observe matter you look at its properties:
