Unformatted text preview: Lab Report # 8 Energy and Specific Heat Aimee Massicotte March 4, 2007 Chemistry 120-71 Massicotte 2 Abstract To calculate the heat lost or gained by using a metal to determine the initial temperature and final temperature of the water by going through a series of calculations which are explained in the procedure. Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to calculate the specific heat of water to calculate heat lost or gained, and to calculate the specific heat in cal/gC and J/gC of a metal object. Materials Thermometer Bunsen Burner Striker Tripod Wire screen 400-mL beaker Balance Calorimeter (Styrofoam cup and cover) Stirring rod Metal object (Bismuth) Goggles Piece of string Crucible tongs Massicotte 3 Procedure First the 400-ml beaker was filled two-thirds full of water. The beaker was placed on top of the wire screen sitting on the tripod; the Bunsen burner was lit with a striker, to begin bringing the water to a rapid boil which took about ten minutes. While the water was heating up we obtained our metal object which happened to be Bismuth and recorded it on our data sheet. Using the balance we determined the mass of the object and recorded our information. Once the water was rapidly boiling we gently lowered the bismuth into the beaker with water with a piece of string. Then we let the water boil for about ten more the beaker with water with a piece of string....
