Study Guide-Terms: Ancient Near East Sumerians- First ancient civilization to have written history Bronze Age- relative term to describe when a civilization started using Bronze Adobe- mud brick (homes) Copper Age- first practical metal used by man Cuneiform - a wedge shaped writing style developed by the Sumerians Mesopotamia -“Between the Rivers” the Tigris and the Euphrates History - written records Dynasty - a kingship passed through a family (father to son) City state - a city and the surrounding boundaries Ziggurat- Temple structures mud brick platforms with a stone temple on top Sumerian King List- a list of the Sumerian Kings, used for dating purposes Polytheistic - the belief in many gods Votive statues- “granted to the Gods”, short statues made of alabaster stone, people in prayer Relief sculptures- carving into a flat surface such as a wall, usually depicts a king with some religious connection Stele- a freestanding object carved on at least one side
