Unformatted text preview: 9/12/07 Stuff on the Board Power ----- Govt Sector/Private Sector/People What is it/how to think about it- “3 faces” and “defacing power Dahl Cremson Gaventa-city limits (Peterson)-Political Regimes Ex: Poletown-Formal govt. structure Project Ideas-Mortgate Rates/Forclosures What to do?-people finance homes and can finance them at initial mortgage rates but can’t Afford them at the new rates and then lose their homes-this is a huge problem for homes in Detroit-banks say you didn’t read the find print and nobody put a gun to your head-it’s a complicated issue and something needs to be done-Health Insurance-Access to Adequate food (Farmer Jack/Kroger forclosures) Project Ideas *Public school public education funding- michigan Highest unemployment rates – Michigan Lecture Power GOVT (capacity to get things done that you want to get done) Govt’s principal source of power is formal legal authority PRIVATE SECTOR Money is the source of power for the private sector Govts need revenue from taxes (property tax, income tax) Money for the city comes from the private sector. (in the form of taxes) Cities need revenues from businesses to survive Businesses can then complain you tax us too much, bother us too much etc. Or we will move They have leverage (power) They can be in someone else’s city PEOPLE Our source of power is the (vote) If we don’t like things we vote to show it we also have (spending power) (boycotts) (Protests)- (mass demonstrations) “3 faces” and “de-facing” power FlloydHunter- picked Atlanta as a place to study powerholders in Atlanta did a lot of investigating-came to the conclusion that there is a relatively small group of power elite in Atlanta… all from the private sector-Coca cola, Delta, CNN- see the same folks over and over Dahl-said hunter went only off of reputations-Did study in New Haven- thinks it depends on the issue- transportation, etc.- no single group gets its way… they compete-both studies were off of first face of power (who wins (gets their way)) Matthew Cremson His idea was -2 nd face of power- who gets to control the agenda to get decided on in the 1 st place-critics ask how are we going to study stuff that doesn’t happen?- goes to Gary Indiana… a place of huge air pollution-nobody addresses the huge air pollution problem anywhere…why?- US steel has the power to keep it off the agenda- he wrote the UNPOLITICS OF AIR POLLUTION-proves you can study the 2 nd face of power John Gaventa-says there is a 3 rd face of power even more subtle “victims of injustice in A democracy can organize…… *power to shape the culture ( what do people think are issues or not)-neither the gross pollution of land and air. Low wages, extremely dangerous conditions, and the situation of almost indentured servants- to an outsider it is completely unjust- theory says if they don’t like it unions can organize to exert power to change-he says when he goes to these towns he sees they are losing… but when...
