IME 144 Terms Homework 1. Lathe - A machine for use in working wood, metal, etc., that holds the material and rotates it about a horizontal axis against a tool that shapes it. 2. Milling Machine - A machine tool for rotating a cutter (milling cutter) to produce plane or formed surfaces on a workpiece, usually by moving the work past the cutter. 3. Workpiece - Work consisting of a piece of metal being machined 4. Tool Bit – A small insert of hard material with appropriate tool geometry used to provide cutting action in a lathe or other machine tool 5. Tolerance - The permissible range of variation in a dimension of an object. 6. Rough Cutting – The process of removing gross amounts to material prior to finish cutting. 7. Tailstock - A movable or sliding support for the dead center of a lathe. 8. Finish Cutting – The process of final cutting to establish surface finish and dimension. 9.
