Gene 3000 02-27-07 Human Evolution (cont’d) Cultural Evolution – changes in behavior based upon learned information, not genetic changes Allowed populations to expand and migrate (as discussed in Wells) Characteristics: o Vertical (older → younger generations); not genetic o Horizontal (peer → peer); also not genetic o Lamarckian (inheritance of acquired characteristics) o Reticulate (“hybridization” of different behavioral patterns) o Blending inheritance Selection is for a trait, not the individuals that use them (not like natural selection) o Example: draft horses and the tractor; replacement of horses by tractors not because of greater reproduction by tractor users Lessening of natural selection by cultural practices; example: lowering of mortality due to improved sanitation Another example of using human associated species to track human evolution/migration; the first example was about humans and the pacific rat from the lecture on 02-22-07 Origins and dispersal of Homo species and their gut bacteria: evidence for helicobacter
