Rochelle Wagner Abrahamian’s book does a wonderful job on explaining the history of Iran as a whole. The History of Modern Iran tells the story of how the country of Iran began as a vast land inhabited by nomadic peoples. Abrahamian wrote this book to clearly describe the extreme changes in society and politics in Iran during the nineteenth century. Abrahamian spends a chunk of the book analyzing the shah’s military buildup. He wrote long paragraphs disapproving the social dislocation by the accelerated increase of the shah’s era, but he does not mention the millions of Iranians forced from to leave their homes because of the war. Even though Abrahamian talks about the shah’s military, he does not go into depth about the Iran-Iraq War. What Abrahamian does thoroughly explain the inequality of income distribution under Reza, along with his autocratic policies. Even though this was not such a good thing, he praises the Islamic Republic for their accomplishments such as the increase in rural life expectancy. The

Abrahamian definitely supports the Islamic Republic and praises them for the progress they have made after Iran had been cruelly dictated by Reza shah. He highlights the importance of the White Revolution as a movement toward the overall wellbeing of all Iranian people. In A History of Modern Iran Abrahamian describes how the centralized state placed pressures on the society below or how social pressures from below have altered the state, such as with the troubled rule of Reza shah and the formation of the Islamic Republic. He uses all these examples to show just how drastically Iran changed during the course of a single century. In the beginning of his book he clearly states his purpose for it, and all the information he provides geos back to the purpose along with it being written in a simple and understanding way that is comprehensible and easy to read....
