Qualitative Analysis of Some Common Ions Purpose: In this lab we will study specific tests used to identify some common cations and anions and detect the ions present in an unknown solution. Introduction: Analytical chemistry is the division of chemistry that deals with the qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis. Qualitative analysis is a determination of what elements, ions, compounds, etc. are present in a sample. Quantitative analysis is a determination of how much of those components is present in the sample. Usually, the qualitative analysis is performed before the quantitative. Procedure: Obtain an unknown and record the number and color in your notebook. Be careful not to run out of unknown since more is not available. For each test use two test tubes, one should be labeled “K” for known and the other “U” for unknown. Be sure that you do not mix them up. Be sure to clean your test tubes well with deionized water after each test. Since this is a qualitative experiment, the quantities specified in the procedure is not critical. It’s necessary to use graduate cylinder for volume measurements. Focus on your observations. 1. Test for carbonate ion Place about 1mL of the known (sodium carbonate) and 1 mL of the unknown in the respective test tubes. Add 1 mL of 6 M of HCl to the known.
