Kennewick Man who livedmore than 9,000 years agoalong the Columbia River became the center of worldwide attention and heated controversyfollowing the 1996 discovery of his nearly complete skeleton at a riverside park in Kennewick.Kennewick Man is the name that has been given the skeletal remains of a prehistorical humanfound on the bank of River Columbia in Washington on July 28, 1996.It is one of the mostancient skeletons ever found. The studies show that the bones are from 7000 to 6900 B.C.E.Kennewick Man was said to be a Native American, so the discovery of the skeleton made a bigcontroversy. Scientists wanted to study the ancient skeleton, but came into a conflict before theycould study the remains in the 2000s. The Umatilla People and many other tribes wanted theremains found returned to them so they could bury him under The Native American GravesProtection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
