Guiding Questions: Foundations of Science Module #3 Genesis: A True Foundation for Science Overview: Genesis provides a true foundation for science because it is declares the foundational presuppositions of science to be true. In addition, Genesis declares how and why the physical world and universe came into existence and along with other books in the Bible it reveals the destiny of the physical world. Unfortunately, many believers have not understood the importance of Genesis as a foundational text and many have bought into the idea that Genesis is an allegory or story rather than true history. Dr Kurt Wise in his text Faith Form and Time defends the historicity of Genesis and describes how important this biblical text is to the foundation of science and foundation of the Christian faith. Reading: Wise, chapters 4-9 Wise chapter 4, How Old are Things? 1 How does scripture refer to itself as historical? Exodus 20:11, Nehemiah 9:6, Acts 17:22-29 and Jesus in Matthew 16:4-6 all attest to the fact that the Genesis account of creation is to be taken literally. 2 How is the term “yom’ used in the Bible? “Yom” always is used to refer to a 24 hour earth rotational day. 3 What is a Hebrew “jussive” command? It was a command from a superior to an inferior, in the same way that a king would command a subject, it would be expected that these commands would be obeyed instantly. It is this type of command that God used when he created. 4 Why did God use six days for creation? God did this as an example for man to follow, he worked six days and then rested on the seventh. 5 How can Genesis 5 and 11 be used as a reliable chronology? They can be used because they give the age of the father at the birth of their child, and the total time span of the genealogy can be easily calculated. 6 What is the issue regarding gaps in Genesis 5 and 11? The issue is whether or not the genealogies skip any generations in their accounts, this seems highly unlikely though because of the way the rest of the bible describes the men in the geneaologies there is very little room for gaps. 7 How can we derive that the earth is only about 6,000 years old from the biblical chronologies? The genealogies show that there were 1, 656 years between creation and the flood, 342 between the flood and the birth of Abraham, about 1000 years from Abraham to Solomon and about 1000 more years from Solomon to Christ, add the 2000 years since Christ and it has been approx. 6000 years since creation. 8 What is the difference between the biblical account and old-age chronologies with respect to; creation of earth before sun?; herbivoric or carnivoric nature of animals?; timing of the existence of disease and suffering?; derivation of man from dust derivation of man from animals?; origin of eve?; populations of animals on the ark? The bible says the earth was created before the sun, whereas the old-age chronologies reverse it. Genesis
