Hailey Sojka Abrahamian Essay “Iran is bound together with a sense of national identity derived not only from its Shi’i and pre-Islamic heritages, but also from the shared experiences of the past century...Iranian identity has been forged not only by common history, common geography, common language, and common religion, but also by common experience in the recent past” (p 194-195). This quote exemplifies the idea that history shapes how one views something in the present. In order to understand present-day Iran one must know and understand its past. The battle between maintaining a strong national identity and progressing with the rest of the world has played a major role in Iran’s past and present. The nineteenth century was a time of change in many industries throughout the world. However Iran did not see fundamental change until the twentieth century. As more people had education the fight for power began to shift away from solely longstanding elites towards intellectuals as well as common middle class people. The oil industry was greatly affected by this. WWII brought struggles with Britain and the USSR to maintain the control they had of Iran’s oil, however towards the end of the war a plea for national control of oil emerged and in some ways succeeded. Iran has a hard past that has been filled with tragedies, political unrest, and great amounts of change. However this all led to what makes up present day Iran, Abrahamian does a fantastic Hailey Sojka Abrahamian Essay job of providing the readers with history in as straightforward and unbiased way as one can providing material to better understand Iran as a nation....
