CHE101 - Laboratory Report Name: Stephanie Baliles Date: 9/13/2015 Title: Charles Law Purpose: To test and confirm Charles Law and to get a better understanding of the relationship between volume and temperature. Procedure: Experiment 1 1. I took a Erlenmeyer flask and closed the closed with a stopper 2. I then filled the Erlenmeyer flask with 1.5 atm of methane gas (CH 4 ) 3. I attached a gas syringe to the flask, watching the plunger of the gas syringe rise as it filled with some of the gas from the Erlenmeyer flask 4. With a thermometer, I attached it to the Erlenmeyer flask and changed the units on the thermometer to "K" for Kelvin 5. I recorded the total volume and the temperature (in Kelvin) * Note: Room temperature is 21.5 °C Volume in gas syringe is 75.0 mL The Erlenmeyer flask volume is 150 mL. The total volume is the sum of the volume of the Erlenmeyer flask plus the volume inside the gas syringe, which is 225.0 mL 6. I then took a constant temperature bath and set its temperature 0 °C (ice) 7. I placed the Erlenmeyer flask in the constant temperature bath 8. As I waited, I let the temperature of the gas sample stabilize, and then recorded the temperature and the total volume of the gas
