Sociological Imagination Sociological imagination is the consciousness that an individual experiences when he is aware of his relationship to society. It occurs when the individual recognizes how he or she fits within larger social structures and how those structures have influenced him or her as an individual. One influential structural force, of which I have gained understanding through developing my sociological imagination, is the basic need to assimilate into a culture and society. The need to assimilate is influenced by a collection of societal pressures and results in respective actions taken to attempt to relieve oneself of those pressures. For example, my parents and grandparents immigrated to the United States during the 1980s and 1960s, respectively, in order to escape the threat of communist rule in China. They immigrated to the United States with the hope of starting a new successful life free of communist rule. My parents and grandparents felt pressure to assimilate properly into
