Henk Meijers Professor Van Wyk Art 201 December 12, 2006 The Bauhaus The Bauhaus has been called one of the most influential arts, craft and design school of the 20th century. It came into the world in the early 1900’s, a time of change and confusion, and revolutionized the way people view design and architecture even to this day. It helped to move art from the purely aesthetical to incorporate both function and beauty. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the world of art and craft education was in great need of change and reform (Whitford 17). Artists and craftsmen continued to work in the same ways that they had always done. They acted as though the Industrial Revolution had never happened. Many people had attempted to start up new schools for art and design through out Europe, but all of them failed to convince the people of their new ideas. Part of the reason for their lack of acceptance is the state of post-war confusion that many Europeans were experiencing (Bayer 9). Many artists were concerned about the future of the artistic movement (Whitford 17). In 1903 Peter Behrens commented on the situation by say, “Whether and when it will be possible to transform the great technical achievements of our age into the expression of a mature, evolved art, is a question of the greatest importance, of significance for the history of human culture”. This question was answered in the opening of the Bauhaus school in Weimar Germany, in 1919. A young German artist named Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in 1919.
