Continent-continent plate collision (1) Continental crust too light, low density, for subduction (2) Starts as ocean-continent (3) Ends with subducting lithosphere breaking off in the mantle (4) Results in (a) Earthquakes (b) Folding and faulting of the continental lithosphere producing mountains (c) Suture zone (i) When two continents collide, you can’t disconnect them (d) NO Volcanism (e) Example, Himalayas, Appalachians 2. Transform boundaries and faults (1) Adjacent plates slide past each other (2) Transform faults associated with mid ocean ridges (3) May also occur on continents (a) Ex. San Andreas Fault (4) Characterized by shallow earthquakes III. Hot Spots A. A volcanic center that is the result of rising hot mantle material termed as “plume” 1. Approx. 200 identified world-wide (1) Yellowstone National Park (2) Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount Chain
