Leo Tolstoy grew up in the upper class during the westernization of Russia. During his college years, Tolstoy was very critical of himself and his actions. After leaving the army he became an advocate for freedom and self- awareness. Then Tolstoy got married to Sofya Bers and had 9 children. During this time, Tolstoy wrote War and Peace and Anna Karenina. While writing Anna Karenina, Tolstoy had a fateful crisis which resulted in his conversion and was recorded in his novel Anna Karenina. The elites in Russia made many new policies and changed the ideology of Russia. Although there was various wars and conflicts in politics, Russia had a golden age in literature and art. The emotional reactions and states of the characters are influenced by external events. The novel is also a romance because the novel centers around two couples, Anna and Vronsky and Levin and Kitty and their problems.
