BUAD309: Management & Organizational Behavior Chapter 1 Notes Manager: An individual who achieves goals through other people Organization: A consciously coordinated social unit composed of 2+ people that functions on a relatively continuous basis to achieve a common set of goals Management’s Functions: Planning: Defining goals, establishing strategy and developing plans to coordinate activities Organizing: Determining what task are to be done, who is to do them, how the tasks are grouped, who reports to whom and where decisions are made Leading: Motivating employees, directing others, selecting effective comm. channels and resolving conflict Controlling: Monitoring activities to ensure they are accomplished as planned & correcting any deviations Other Managerial Functions Management Skills: Technical Skills: Ability to apply specialized knowledge or expertise Human Skills: Ability to work with, understand and motivate people both individually and in groups Conceptual Skills: Mental ability to analyze/diagnose complex situations Organizational Behavior: Field that investigates the impact individuals, groups and structure have on behavior within organizations for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving effectiveness
