Math 100 Function Activity Handout Martin H. Weissman 1. Instructions This is an activity to practice with the definition of functions. The following three pages are meant to be cut into cards, and students are asked to match cards according to whether they describe the same function. After matching cards, we will determine whether functions are injective or not. 1.1. How many. Answer the following questions: How many functions are there from { 1 , 2 , 3 } to { a,b } ? Generalize. How many injective functions are there from { 1 , 2 , 3 } to { a,b } ? Generalize. How many surjective functions are there from { 1 , 2 , 3 } to { a,b } ? Generalize. 1.2. Questions to think about. Here are some further questions to ponder, if you are done thinking about the existing questions? Let S be a set. Let P be the set of functions from S to the set { 0 , 1 } . How many elements does P have? How many subsets does S have? What is the relation between these two questions, and why? Let
