Unformatted text preview: Andrea Brisker A-12 TA: Zac 11/14/07 Herbivory and Predation Experiment Introduction: In this experiment, we tested to see the interaction between herbivory and predation in a closed ecosystem. Herbivory is when an animal consumes a plant of vegetative or reproductive parts (Rost et al, 493.). In our experiment the predators were after the animals that practiced herbivory. To set up this experiment, we were divided into groups of five, and each group was given two potted cabbages ( Brassica oleracea) . The groups were then assigned what was added to the cabbage. Some groups had pot A, which was the control group (meaning it was only cabbage). Other groups had to add aphid insects ( Hyadaphis psuedobrassicea) ; while other groups added aphid insects and midge insects ( Aphidoletes aphidimyza) . There were two different types of cabbage pots that had both aphids and midges. Pot C had a low inoculum of midges, but pot D had a high midge inoculum (Canington et al. 1991-2007). The importance of this experiment is to show how this interaction between herbivorous and predatory insects affects our daily lives. The aphids are primary consumers that prey on vegetation (cabbage in the case of our experiment), while the midges are primary predatory / secondary consumers, which feed on the aphids. Placing the midges into the same pots as the aphids in the cabbage pots is known as biological pest control.
