PSC 1-3 Lecture 3 Page 1 of 5 Announcements: There are no announcements today. Previous Lecture: In the last lecture we discussed what it meant for something to be scientific. We also discussed different types of research methods: experimental, quasi-experimental, observational, longitudinal, and cross-sectional. We also began talking about ways of interpreting data, so the first few notes will be from the last lecture. This Lecture: I. The ways to interpret data in research a. Causation must be established, but usually researchers get data establishing correlation. i. Correlation does not mean causation! b. There is also descriptive data used in interpreting research such as mean and standard deviation. c. Meta- analysis is taking several individual articles and putting their data into one. II. Basic Biopsychology in humans a. The Central Nervous system (CNS) i. It is made up of the brain and the spinal cord. b. The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) i. This contains everything besides the brain and the spinal cord. ii. The peripheral nervous system contains two main parts. 1. The first one is the Somatic nervous system a. This is human control of the body for example muscles moving. 2. The second one is the Autonomic nervous system a. This is involuntary control such as heartbeat and breathing. b. The Autonomic nervous system is divided into two parts. i. The first is the sympathetic group. It is responsible for the “fight or flight” response when something unexpected happens. It causes stress hormones to rage, the heart to beat faster, and blood pressure to go up. ii.
