PSC 1-3 Lecture 8 Page 1 of 5 Announcements: Corrections: In lecture 4 page 1, FMRT is supposed to be FMRI, and in lecture 5 reference to the pena in the ear is supposed to be pinna and on page 1 “love” is supposed to be “lobe”. Previous Lecture: None: we had the midterm. This Lecture: I. Personality a. Personality is a relatively stable difference that manifests itself during time. b. There are four approaches to understanding personality. i. One is trait theory ii. Another is social cognitive learning theory iii. The third is psychoanalysis iv. And the fourth is humanism II. Trait Theory a. There are so many individual traits, but Costa and McCray study the “Big Five” i. These are the five super traits that describe most of people’s personalities. ii. They are summed up in the acronym OCEAN. 1. O is for openness to new experiences (how willing or unwilling people are to try new things) 2. C is for conscientiousness (how clean, on time, and neat people are or how impulsive and messy they are) 3. E is for extroversion versus introversion. 4. A is for how agreeable or disagreeable someone is. 5. N is for neuroticism. b. The traits tend to a stable over persons lifetime, especially after 30. c. The nature versus nurture debate comes into play when people are discussing the trait theory. i. Do traits develop from the environment a person is in, or are people born with their traits?
