HIST 2003 – History of the American People to 1877 Primary Source Analysis Thomas Paine’s Common Sense Due: electronically by the start of class , Tuesday, October 7, 2014 Assignment Criteria: Start with a brief background on Paine and its historical context. Be sure to include an argument in your analysis. “Thomas Paine advocated American independence from Great Britain” is a statement, not an argument. I am requiring you to go a step further and clearly write why and how, employing evidence from his writing, you argue Paine sought independence. While you are not limited to only the following questions, your analysis must specifically answer each of these questions: What type of reasons did Paine use? What type of rhetoric (style of speech) did he use? Who or what did Paine believe was wrong with the British political system? What evidence did Paine give for a separate colonial identity? How is Paine’s colonial identity similar or different from what we have examined in lectures and previous assigned readings?
