David Sedaris purpose in writing “Me Talk Pretty One Day” is to encourage those
wanting to learn a new language, but think they can’t or that they’re too old to go back to school,
to do it even though it will be difficult. The article gives a clear picture of the personal
difficulties of the author and the difficulties of a language class, but also demonstrates the reward
of overcoming those obstacles. Sedaris relates to his audience over the difficulties and ultimate
triumphs that’s intended to encourage them into keep moving and pushing to their goals; learning
a new language will be rewarding at the end. Sedaris also informs his audience that sometimes
there are teachers that don’t always have your interest at heart. In a funny sense of way, he
writes about his teacher’s behavior towards him and the other classmates, how abusive she is.
