Running head: SISTER FLOWERS JOURANL1Journaling Sister Flowers by Maya AngelouShantedra PearsonAshford University
SISTER FLOWERS JOURANL2Journaling Sister Flowers by Maya AngelouSister Flowers, by Maya Angelou, is a personal essay piece that tells a specific story fromAngelou’s personal life. Sister Flowersaccounts an experience that Maya Angelou, as young Marguerite Johnson, experienced during what she’d believed would be just an errand. Angelou would attribute this experience as having been life-changing. Her purpose in writing this piece isto describe that fateful encounter, and to express the effects that it had on her life. This story is significant because it highlights the commencement of a silent Marguerite’s journey to her voice, which was really a journey to herself. There were several components of the literary components described in the Connell and Sole (2013) text, including tone and voice. The voice and vocabulary used insinuate that Angelou may have intended the piece to be read by a far-reaching audience.
