1 General Biology Study Objective Questions # 12 DNA Structure 1. The genetic material is stored in which cell organelle? What experimental evidence supports your assertion? Genetic material is stored in the nucleus. Hammerling’s experiment on green algae asserts this. 2. What is transformation? Which experiment proved this process? Transformation is the transfer of genetic information from one cell to another; this can alter the genetic makeup of the recipient cell. Proven by Griffith’s experiment involving the mice and the bacteria. 3. Is the hereditary material protein or nucleic acid? What experimental evidence supports this view? Hershey-Chase experiment confirmed that hereditary material is made up of DNA not protein. 4. What do the acronyms DNA and RNA stand for? What are purines and pyrimidines? DNA stands for deoxyribose nucleic acid and RNA stands for ribose nucleic acid. Purines are double ringed nitrogenous bases; adenine and guanine. Pyrimidines are single-ringed bases; uracil, thymine or cytosine.
