Tuesday, October 30, 2007 SOCIOLOGY 252 Lecture: The Privatization of Risk – privatization of families Bringing down risk to the private sphere… individualization Privatization vs. Socialization (spreading of whatever to a broader society) Defining privatization What kind of risks? o Anything that impedes their ability to provide for themselves, unable to support  themselves; incur risks of economic dislocation from the care  o Economic dislocation- health, job loss, child birth, child care, etc. o These risks are increasing; the problems are increasingly defined as individual  problems o In 2001, more likely to declare bankruptcy if you are married with children, than if  you are single Two-income family now earns 75% more than one-income families, but  they are also spending more Spending a third of their annual income; debt Consumption- people are going wild and can’t control themselves
