On the Road(e-book) On the Roadtakes place in the 1940’s and 1950’s. The novel takes place in many different cities: New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Mexico City, and Denver. These are some of the locations while a portion of the story is told about how the main character, Sal, travels to different locations. The story is told through the point of view of Sal Paradise, who is obsessed with another major character Dean Moriarty. The book is historical fiction, although it displays events that are possible in reality the story itself is not real. The story starts off by presenting the narrator and shows his obsession of Dean. The story shows the narrator, Sal, going West in his pursuit of Dean. The story itself shows Sal drinking and surviving while seeking out something better which he is unable to obtain. Later he expresses that his main goal is to find the perfect women and settle down, which is partially obtained in the end of the novel. The main theme of the book is Sadness. Sal is seen as a sad character and his actions shows that trait. Sal when he reaches Dean in his journey shortly leaves him to attend an Opera. The Baritone cried “What gloom” and Sal described it is as great (Part 1 Ch 1 Par 6). This shows that he enjoyed the sadness in the play because he himself was sad and he could share his sadness. As the story progressed Sal began pondering about marriage and discussed this with Dean. Dean responded positively and Sal, the narrator, described it as a sad night (Part 2 Ch 2
