Calvin Luttinen ATS 281 Exam 2 Part 2 Visual Arts Piece 1- Vincent Van Gogh – The Starry Night Van Gogh uses the elements of design to guide the viewer’s eye through the piece and direct it where to look. The most significant element used in this piece would be the element of line. Van Gogh uses brush strokes to create a very distinct focus of line in his work and in this piece, it is meant to guide the viewer’s eye across the night sky. Van Gogh use long fluid strokes from right to left in the sky, as well as vertical lines in the city to bring the eye to the sky and across from left to right. The color used in the piece, most notably the dark and light blues, offer a somewhat serine mood to the piece. Van Gogh also uses scale to direct the eye toward the sky. The city looks somewhat miniaturized compared to the vast sky. This brings the sky to the forefront of the painting and makes the more detailed city just a background. Piece 2- Henri Matisse – The Red Room Matisse uses the elements of color to create an intense mood in his painting. The painting is mostly in a dark intense red that engrosses the eye and controls the painting. The red makes the room overpowering to those in it and is the predominant force in the
