Chapter 4SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONSSummaryThis study aimed to measure the level of awareness of the College of EducationFourth (4th) Year students on the Solid Waste Management programs of DMMMSU-SLUC, Agoo, La Union. Specifically, it aimed to determine the awareness of the studentson the national, local, University, and local Solid Waste Management (SWM) policies. Italso aimed to find out the regularity of practice of the respondents on some solid wastemanagement activities. The respondents involved in this research are a sample of twohundred one (201) randomly selected Fourth (4th) Year BSE and BEE students ofDMMMSU-SLUC College of Education. This study utilized a descriptive designconsisting a quantitative survey and it used a questionnaire as the tool of collecting data.Based from the results of the study, it arrived at the following findings that:1.The respondents are highly aware on the national and local SWM policies based onthe AWM of 2.55. However, the high level of awareness (2.81) on wastesegregation does not correlate with the persistent problem of mixed garbage in theCampus. Moreover, they are not well aware there is a Solid Waste Managementprogram implemented in their respective LGU (AWM=2.39) and barangays(AWM=2.36). This could show that the implementation of SWM programs in not
19efficient in the local levels, thereby showing little or no observable impact to thepeople.2.The respondents are highly aware on the SWM policies of the University and theCampus based on the AWM of 2.46. However, they possess little knowledge on thecorresponding consequences in violating the anti-littering provision of the StudentCode of Discipline (AWM=2.31), meaning that there is inadequacy in informationdissemination and execution of the said policy. They are also not well aware on thecolor coding of the trash bins in the Campus (AWM=2.26), another indication ofinadequate orientation and education among the students on the CSWMP. On theother hand, the respondents are highly aware on the recently issued SWM policies, such as the prohibition of plastic and polystyrene materials inside the Campus(AWM=2.66).3.The respondents are highly active in performing some solid waste managementpractices. Their most practiced SWM activities are putting candy wrapper insidethe bag or in the pocket (AWM=2.81), recycling or reusing waste materials(AWM=2.64), and using reusable water containers instead of buying single-use,disposable ones (AWM=2.61). However, a fraction of the respondents do not refuseplastic drinking straws, as manifested in the AWM of 2.34, which may signify thatthey still prefer using single-use plastic straws which contribute to the bulk ofplastic wastes in the community.
