Impact of globalization on culture and identity 1. Could Taylor’s view of society (three conditions of globalization) provide an explanation for the rise of fundamentalism? 2. What are the fundamentalists protesting against? a. loss of identity, traditions and values b. secularization of society c. “cultural relativism”: the concept that we have to be sensitive to people that believe differently than we do; lack of cultural absolutes. d. loss of moral authority 3. Will globalization reduce the importance of cultural identity? a. Yes: Friedman’s Golden Straightjacket - pushing aside traditional cultures for productivity and profit.
