The Gift of the MagiO. Henry (1906)The core conflict in the story is the couple’s struggle to survive in the most of poverty. O. Henry describes their apartment in detail in order to show just how poor the couple is in material wealth. In addition, Jim and Della have an internal struggle. Della’s long beautiful hair is her most prized possession, and she has to convince herself that she’s doing the right thing in having it cut. For Jim, his watch is a family heirloom that has been handed down to him. It is not something he can go out and buy later if he should get the money. It is a difficult conflict for himas well to sell the watch. The theme of the story is love, generosity, wealth, and poverty. The theme of love is shown through the selfless actions of both Della and Jim; the both sell their most prized possessions in order to purchases Christmas gifts for the other.
