1. Glucagon is synthesized by the pancreas in response to the glucose concentration in the blood. Glucagon binding to its receptor on the liver cells, which generates intracellular cAMP, results in glucose mobilization from stored glycogen. Glucagon is released from the pancreas when the concentration of glucose decreases to less than 5 mM. Glucagon is critical for the liver’s function in supplying glucose to tissues that depend primarily on glycolysis for their energy needs. Therefore what is seen with Alex is not a normal condition. 2. This could be due to a deficiency in glycogen phosphorylase. Glycogen phosphorylase catalyzes the rate controlling step in glycogen break down. This is a sign of McArdle’s disease. Even though glycogen is synthesized normally, it cannot supply fuel for glycolysis to keep up with the demand for ATP. 3. a.
