SPB(v33.0)/ Cobene/ Fall 2020827Academic Essay and Research Document Presentation Guidelines(Cobene/ English and Humanities)[AERDPG/ v11.8]*The presentation factor (the designed “look-and-feel”) of your formally written work isan important consideration in project evaluation and performance grading. A clean, standardized document indicates both significant formal knowledge of language, audiences, and reading modes, and also a positively self-reflective professionaldemeanor. Your finished document is a mirror of your deepest attitude toward your ownwork and the knowledge about the world which that work conveys. Therefore, thefollowing notes aim to highlight essential features of a well-prepared college/universityessay, or similar document (such as a research profile, formal notes, letter, presentationscript, field-notes, and so on).Your formal written work is graded on the quality and consistency of your useand mastery of these presentation conventions and strategies. Successful use of thissystem of document-design rules is a positive, elegant sign of your focus and attention, your willingness to take pains in the articulation of complex arguments, and youraccomplished commitment to a subtle, persuasive craft of professional communication.None of the rules and guidelines here constitute ‘rocket science’: they simply requirefocused attention and constant practice. You’ll find that after a certain number ofrepetitions, the information and forms become ‘second nature’ and will flow out of youas you work, easily and naturally. At such a point, they will not be a burden added to theconstruction of assignments, but rather an easy, supple skill that can quickly elevate yourthinking, ease your anxiety, and signal your educational sophistication.*1.Text Margins: Standard page-size for academic work is 8½-by-11-inch sheets. Thissize-factor should be replicated in digital submissions as well. The margins of youressay’s pages should be one-inch from the edge of the page on all four sides. The innerarea made by one-inch margins is known as thetext box, and describes the “typable” textarea of a page. This feature is intended not only for hard-copy print-outs of a document, but also for any digital versions delivered as .doc, .docx, and/or .pdf file formats. (In on-line or digital documents, it is important to submit your document set to ‘Print LayoutView’ and on ‘100% magnification’ so that it looks like a printed page—the white box‘page’ filled with type surrounded by the grey ‘table-top’).2.Essay Identification: In the top left-hand corner of the text-box on the first page only, you should place the ID Box. This is an owner/context identifier block. It should containthe following information, in the following order:
