Wednesday, September 26, 2007 Chapter 1: Biology Exploring Life What is Biology? Biology is the study of life A Pelican Story A single organism (pelican) and are able to observe adaptation Nosedive= stun the fish in order to actually eat the fish They are an important part of environmental balance and help regulate fish population We overfish are waters , so the pelicans become a competition for the commercial fishers Pesticides and other chemicals made their way into the coastal waters and up the food chain, also affecting the pelicans (made eggs extremely fragile affecting birth) Biomagnifications - upside down pyramid It is more concentrated the farther up the pyramid, usually not affected Scope of Life Biosphere- talk about life from a global perspective Very broad ranging biosphere You can study things on a global perspective (how is it going to affect everyone/the whole world) You can study it at a molecular level(narrow medical level)- biochemistry/ molecular biology Connections
